mathias read, ship on a rough sea |
oil on panel, a spirited and dramatic
work by mathias read (1669-1747). read was born in Clerkenwell,
london, he is believed to have travelled to ireland as a pupil
of jan van wyck where he was involved in the battle of the boyne
as a sea captain in king williams fleet. on his return he
settled in whitehaven where he was commissioned by sir john
lowther. ship on a rough sea is one of the works that resided
either side of a fireplace in the lowther arms inn, it shows
signs of having been used as a cupboard and retains the key hole
and handle. i have chosen to leave the piece unframed, framing
can be arranged if desired. |
